There is something special about the first day of school. It signals the beginning of a new journey for children and adults. Whether it's a new school, a new teacher, or a new group of friends to meet, the first day of school is a unique experience we've all felt.

When the big yellow school bus opens its doors to welcome kindergarten students for the first time, camera flashes pop as moms and dads watch their five-year-old begin an exciting new chapter in their lives. Tears are often shed, and sometimes the crying is actually from the children. It's hard to watch our little ones grow up.

The start of a new school year also signals a new chapter in the lives of middle school and junior high students as well. No longer are they confined to one classroom with one teacher. Now, they take a variety of courses and move from one classroom to another with a new sense of responsibility and independence. These teenagers are also growing up and transforming into young adults right before our eyes.

High school students look forward to the first day of school for many reasons. Seniors anticipate a year of memorable events including the prom and graduation. For other underclassmen the opportunity to drive to school, participate in sports and other extra-curricular activities or perhaps meet the guy or girl of their dreams is an allure. Whatever the desired outcome is, it all starts with the first day of school.

Teachers have been busy preparing for the new school year as well. While students enjoyed a well deserved break, teachers have been taking summer courses, participating in professional development and preparing their classrooms to welcome back students. The average teacher spends hundreds of dollars of their own money to make sure students in their charge have the proper supplies.

It doesn't matter if your child attends a public school or private school, the first day of school should be a day to remember. Take time to talk with your child about the upcoming school year. Share your memories of your "first days" and plant the seed for a great school year. Help your child set goals and show him or her how much you value an education, so in turn, they'll work to achieve academically.
